With the summer at an end and only a few more weeks before the nights are just to cold, squeeze in a mini adventure in your own backyard.

Each year, millions of Americans head out to their local campgrounds. Camping in the great outdoors is any camper’s dream; however, not everyone is able to camp at a campground or state park.  If you find it difficult or impossible to go camping, you may want to consider backyard camping.  You may very well find that it is the perfect backyard activity, especially in the evening.

Although camping in your backyard may not seem glamorous, it can be a fun and exciting adventure.  In fact, it is an adventure that thousands of families enjoy each year.  Backyard camping is popular for a wide variety of different reasons. One of those reasons includes the ease of camping. If you are an avid camper, it is likely that you may know all too well how hard to can be to make it to your campsite.  Not only do you have to worry about getting yourself to the campsite, but all of your sstuff as well. And, imagine if you forgot anything!  In most cases, backyard camping significantly cuts down on the hassle of most camping trips.

Backyard camping is also popular because it allows campers to camp is a safe area.  Unfortunately most campers, while camping on public grounds, are unfamiliar with their surroundings and unfamiliar with other campers.  Unfortunately, in today’s society it is just too much of a risk for some individuals. If physical safety is a concern of yours, that concern can almost completely be eliminated with backyard camping. Not only will you know the area, but you also know who or what should be in your neighborhood.

Backyard camp outs are popular among those with children, especially young children.  When it comes to camping, there are many children who are not at the right age to go.   Whether it is due to unfamiliar territory, uncomfortable sleeping spaces, or being away from what they know, there are many children that are unable to handle a camping trip.  However, as a parent, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be able to enjoy camping. With backyard camping, everything should workout for everybody.  Not only will be camping in the outdoors, but you will also be near your home, in case you need anything for your children.

While backyard camp outs are ideal for those with small children, camp outs are also fun for everyone else.  Many individuals, including adults without children, enjoy backyard camping because it is convenient, safe, and free.  Most public campgrounds, in the United States, charge a fee for campers.  While this fee will vary from location to location, it can get quite expensive. That is why backyard camping is so popular in the United States.

If you are interested in having a backyard camp out you will have to decide which supplies you will need.  Depending on your preference, you may be able to sleep in a tent or underneath the stars.  In addition to sleeping equipment, you may want to think about backyard toys, food, drinks, and snacks.

By preparing for your backyard camp out, you should have everything that you need. Proper planning will also prevent you from having to go inside your home. Avoiding your home as much as possible, even though you are in the backyard, is a great way to make the most out of your backyard camping adventure.

Are Natural skin care products the answer to all problems?

When it comes to skin care products, you will find that a lot of people are very particular about using only natural skin care products. They treat all the synthetic products as harmful to the skin.

So, are natural skin care products the answer to all of our problems? What if a natural skin care product is not available for the treatment of a particular skin disorder? Are the synthetic skin care products so harmful that they should be banned?

Different people have different answers to these questions. However, the reality is that due to presence of synthetic preservatives, it’s really tough to find a natural skin care product that is 100% natural. There are natural skin care products that have natural preservatives, but their cost might be detrimental. Moreover, such natural skin products have a shorter shelf life and hence are not preferred by the manufacturers of natural skin care products.

Some people carry a wrong notion that since natural skin care products are natural, they cannot cause any harm to the skin. The suitability of a skin care product is not based on whether it is synthetic or natural. An unsuitable natural skin care product can harm you in almost the same way as a synthetic one.

So, use natural skin care products, but be open to synthetic ones too (you might need them when a natural solution is not available) Your selection of a natural skin care product should be based on 3 factors: The skin type (dry, oily, normal, sensitive) of the person who will use that natural skin care product

  • The climatic conditions in which it will be used e.g. hot and humid condition would warranty
  • The use of oil-free natural skin care products.
  • The process for application/use of the natural skin care product. A good natural skin care product (in fact any product) can seem useless if not used in the proper way.

You can also make natural skin care products by yourself, by using the recipes that are readily available on this site and in the books at book stores. Use of organic fruits and vegetables is also popular as a natural skin care procedure. Some essential oils, herbal oils, are useful too and are known for their moisturising and antiseptic properties. However, using a natural skin care product does not mean that you can exercise carelessness with other aspects of skin care. Natural skin care products should be used like supplements to the following ‘essential’ recommendations: healthy eating habits (avoiding oily food), regular exercise, drinking a lot of water (8 glasses everyday), and cleanliness. This will then form a perfect and completely natural skin care routine that will help maintain a healthy beautiful skin for longer time.

Home Remedies for Asthma to Prevent Asthma Attack

When it comes to asthma home remedies be careful about which ones you choose. If you are looking for natural asthma home remedies on the net,be careful and study each one before attempting them yourself, look for testimonials from other asthmatics that have similar symptoms to what you may be experiencing.Another good tip to remember when trying to prevent asthma attacks, is to try and cover you nose and mouth when going out into the cold air, because the cold air will likely cause symptoms for you.

Besides, it is a good idea to stay away from dairy products such as milk and cheese, because they can increase the amount of mucus that comes with an asthma attack.Natural asthma home remedies that actually work can be something that is hard to come by so do your research before trying any asthma home remedies.

Natural Home Remedies for Asthma

There are a lot of natural asthma home remedies out there and finding the one that is both perfect for you and actually works can be a difficult experience, so here are some natural asthma home remedies that might make that experience a little bit easier.Today one of the most popular natural home remedies for asthma would be honey. Yes, you read that right, regular honey right out of your kitchen! It is said that by smelling the honey it can actually reduce your asthma symptoms.

A lot of people who suffer from nocturnal asthma know how difficult the night time hours can be, but vitamin C may very well be the answer. Vitamin C is said to help prevent those symptoms that occur during the night and early hours of the morning, so by taking vitamin C before bed could help reduce some of your night time symptoms. Sometimes out of all the asthma home remedies there is just nothing better then good old-fashioned fresh air, simply setting outdoors can help reduce your asthma symptoms, but be careful to avoid dust and cold weather.

Garlic is also considered to be an effective part of the group of natural asthma home remedies. Another popular theory for curing or reducing symptoms would be to boil garlic in milk. This is said to help in many asthmatic symptoms. There are also many asthma home remedies involving grapesthis may sound a little strange but some people swear that it is effective. The theory is that you should soak fresh grapes with seeds, in water then place them in a cool place. Then chew the grapes before bed. This helps prevent asthma symptoms. Again, none of these home remedies have been scientifically proven to be true. They are simply home treatments that others have tried. Some may work while others may not, it is up to you to decide for yourself if these treatments actually work.

Remember that if you are thinking about trying any of these, ask your local physician to see if it will be safe for you to try out these home remedies. Never forget that a lot of the home remedies for asthma out there today are just suggestions by people who have asthma or know someone with asthma. When you are looking for remedies online, be careful to choose web sites that are legitimate, and that provide facts about asthma and treatments. Be sure that the home remedies you try are all natural. So, play it smart and choose wisely when it comes to asthma home remedies.

poor_posture_fix_posture_braceMany of us heard our mothers’ tell us to “Stand Up Straight.”  How right she was! Poor posture does so much more than lead to physical problems, it has an effect on out emotions too.  How often does someone who is having a fabulous day have slumped and drooping shoulders? Not often.  Poor posture leads to orthopedic problems of the neck, lower and upper back.  It can also cause sluggish digestion, especially for individuals who have desk jobs.

I noticed, actually my husband noticed, that when I sat in front of the computer I was practially leaning into my own lap.  This lead to shoulder discomfort that loaned itself to a poor nights sleep, making me irritable and unproductive.  The dominos were starting to fall.  Want to know how I fixed this? Really sticky masking tape.

Rather than having aches and pains remind me sit up straight,  I slapped a piece of masking tape across squared, well postured scapula (the “wing” part of the shoulders, across the upper back).  It did take some getting used to, but it isn’t a bulky, over priced, full torso brace.  It was strange to roll my shoulders forward,  but I slept better and felt better.

After four straight hours of sitting up properly, my abs were tight, my tummy was happy and I just felt good! My shoulders were, admittedly, a little sore from new use.  This went away after a few days.  Just having that sticky reminder has really improved my sleep, aches, pains and attitude.  Its a great training method  for younger kids, slouchy teens and desk jockies alike.

Vegetable Gardening Tips

patio-vegtable-garden-save-money-gardening

With the costs of living rising all the time, it may be possible to save money and increase your family’s health at the same time by growing vegetables in your backyard or patio.

It’s a good idea to choose your favorite vegetables to grow and plan beds for early, middle of the season and late varieties.

Most vegetables require at least 6 hours of sunlight per day, some need 8. Some quick growers like lettuce and radish can be grown between the rows of plants that take longer to mature, like beet or corn, thus making full use of the area available.

Throughout dry periods, vegetable gardens need extra watering. Most vegetables benefit from an inch or more of water each week, especially when they are fruiting.

During the growing season watch for insect pests. If you discover a bug problem early it will be much easier, but be careful to not use pesticides once the vegetable are close to being picked unless it becomes an absolute necessity. Organic gardening is one healthy and environment-friendly option. Once you have reaped your crop, put the vegetable waste into your compost pile so that it can be recycled for next spring.

It is important to protect your vegetable garden from wild animals looking for a tasty treat. Make sure your garden is surrounded by a fence that will keep out dogs, rabbits, and other animals. The harm done by wandering animals during one season can equal the cost of a fence. A fence also can serve as a frame for peas, beans, tomatoes, and other crops that need support.

Protection is needed in order for your vegetable garden to yield a bountiful harvest. Hard work will pay dividends if necessary precautions have been made.

I recently read an article in a popular vegetarian/vegan magazine concerning the diets of our pets.  I choose to be a vegetarian.  I don’t eat anything with a face.  I do not, however, look down on anyone who chooses to eat meat.  To each their own.

Animals, on the other hand, do not have a choice.  They eat what you feed them.  Our lovable lap cats and snugly dog buddies are CARNIVORES.  They are not omnivores, like people.  They have to eat meat to obtain proper nutrition.  I believe a vegetarian or vegan  diet for carnivorous animals is borderline abuse for malnutrition.

The diets of our pets should be a concern to any loving pet owner.  The major pet food companies add so much filler, dye and preservatives to pet food its good to look for alternatives.  But healthy, realistic alternatives.  Its natural for cats to chase birds and dogs to harass rabbits.  So instead of a strictly veg diet for Fido, look for a responsible alternative.  One where the animal killed lived well on grain food, the packaging plant uses recyclable material and nothing unrecognizable is on the  ingredient list.  For example Newman’s Own organic pet food has a good rep.

You can also chose to make your own pet food.  Find an organic butcher, or use Whole Food’s meat, and make it yourself! You decrease “food miles”  (the distance food is transported from the time of its production until it reaches the consumer) and know exactly what you pet isn’t getting, fillers, and what they are getting.  They are getting proper nutrition as nature intended.

Who isn’t prone to a sore or scratchy throat? I thought bringing this up, given that fall is almost on us, would be useful.   However, there are about as many different reasons to get a sore throat as people out there getting them.  Do NOT forget to listen to what your body says.  A quick salt water gargle or tea with honey will not make up for you taking care of yourself.  Take a day or half day off work, if needed.  Take your vitamins and get enough rest and fluids.

1. Crush a piece of ginger root to extract the juice, add a tablespoon of honey and 3 tablespoons of lime.  Sip this concoction 3 times daily.

2. Gargle with salt water to relieve inflammation.

3. Apply apple cider vinegar compress to the throat to relieve symptoms.

4. Gargle with warm honey water.  Honey is known to have antibiotic  properties.

5. White Cabbage juice is an anti-inflammatory and will draw out infection.  (My mom did this as a kid.  She says it’s disgusting but it works)

6. Hot honey and lemon drink is soothing, will reduce symptoms and encourage healing. (tastes better than a cabbage smoothie, but works best when used as a cabbage smoothie chaser.)

7. Steam inhalation of lavender or thyme will relieve the discomfort.  Especially helpful to use lavender if you can’t sleep because of the discomfort.  Throw some fresh lavender in a pot of boiling water, steep for 5-7 min.  With your face 18-24  inches from the water open your mouth and breathe deeply.

8 Increase vitamin C intake, suck a zinc lozenge and increase fluid intake.  “Fluid” is herbal teas, natural juices and water, not coffee, soda, and beer.

Hope you feel better

Depression has existed for as long as humanity.  It has been treated many different ways in different cultures.  This is a cross-section of different natural treatments that have been implemented.

Symptoms of depression include: slow speech, poor concentration, confusion and irritability, self accusation and loss of self-esteem, insomnia or excessive sleeping, a feeling of emptiness and despair, loss of appetite, loss of sexual drive.

Before continuing, I note that I am not a doctor and do recommend being professionally evaluated, and especially so if one has contemplated hurting them self or taking their life.

Chinese Herbalism:

Depression is believed to be caused by stagnation of the liver qi (energy) and may be treated with angelica peony root, licorice and thorowax root.

Herbalism:

The best antidepressant and nervine (with a specific action for nerves) herbs include: balm, borage, limeflower, oats, rosemary and vervain.  These can be taken as herbal teas, added to to the bath, taken as tablets or in tincture form (herbs suspended in alcohol).

Aromatherapy:

There are a number of antidepressant oils which can be used in the bath, in a vaporizer on a light bulb and in massage.  They include neroli, jasmine, geranium, melissa and rose.  Ylang Ylang, lavender, clary sage, and chamomile are sedative and antidepressant, which can be especially helpful for those who’s depression is accompanied by insomnia.

Homeopathy:

It would be necessary to see a homeopath to receive treatment that is suited to the individual and which addresses the cause of the depression. Specific remedies include: Aurum, for feelings of worthlessness, suicidal feelings and self disgust.  Pulsatilla for bursting into tears at the smallest hurt.  Arsenicum, if you feel chilly, tired, restless, and obsessively tidy.  Ignatia if depression has an external cause, such as bereavment.

Vitamins and Minerals:

Depression which occurs just before menstruation (PMS) may be caused by a vitamin B6 deficiency; post natal depression may be caused by a deficiency in B12 and folic acid.  Nutritional supplements and allergy tests may be suggested by a practitioner.  Ensure you have adequate intake of vitamin C.  Some therapists may recommend supplementing the amino acid tryptophan, which is abundant in foods like bananas, seaweed and spinach.

Not a fun subject, ew, bowels.  Truth is we ALL have one.  Most of us are guilty of eating yucky, chemical packed, unhealthy foods that are difficult to digest and expel properly.  I did my first cleanse less than a year ago.  I felt so different and light after trying it out.  It is a healthy, natural technique I recommend trying.

Colon cleanse is becoming popular as a method of detoxification and weight loss with more and more people taking natural methods to clean colon in order to lead healthier lives. There are many benefits and most of us can take advantage of various natural methods in order to get rid of illness causing toxins that hamper our body’s day to day functions. Some of the major benefits are as discussed below:

1. Overall Cleansing and Detoxification

Most of us know that we are overloading our body with toxins acquired from the environment and from food that is processed or grown in soil that is already polluted by toxic waste. Due to the large amount of toxin intake, our body is generally unable to get rid of all these harmful materials while performing its normal functioning and this leads to an accumulation of toxic waste in our organs, especially in the liver, lungs, skin, lymph nodes, kidney and colon.
Some major side effects of toxin accumulation are lowered immunity, gastro intestinal problems, bad looking skin, headaches and sluggishness and irregular bowel movements or constipation.

Therefore, it is necessary to perform internal cleansing of these organs especially the colon so that we can get rid of toxins and their side effects.

2. Freedom from Digestive Tract Problems

The most common and easily identifiable symptom of an unhealthy colon is constipation and irregular bowel movements. Stomach pains, heartburn, acidity, gastritis, flatulence and bloating are other major symptoms that point towards an unhealthy and clogged up colon.

When you clean up your colon using natural methods, then all the waste and toxins clogging up the colon are flushed out, which helps your digestive system resume its normal functioning, thus making you healthy and free from all GI tract related problems.

3. Greater Energy and Vitality

As you keep stuffing your body with toxins contained in processed and overcooked foods and drinks, excessive alcohol, caffeine and nicotine as well as drugs and medications for all kinds of ailments, the organs in your body, especially your digestive tract, liver, kidneys and colon start requiring more and more energy in order to fight this waste and get rid of it.

While your organs which are already weakened by all the trash that you consume and expose yourself to fail in performing their tasks properly, more and more energy is diverted towards getting rid of all the waste that is clogging them. As a result, you start feeling drained and sluggish right from the moment you wake up till the end of the day.

When you clean your colon and other internal organs, then you can feel a considerable increase in your energy levels because of two reasons. Firstly, your GI tract starts performing better, leading to better digestion and absorption of the energy from your food. Secondly, lesser energy is involved in digesting food, thus leaving more energy to be spent on external tasks.

4. More Benefits

Some other benefits of colon cleansing that you get as a result of the effective cleaning of your colon are a better looking and problem free skin as well as an increased immunity and resistance to diseases. Most people also end up losing weight as a result of better digestion and lower rate of water and waste retention. These are only some benefits of and you can definitely count on becoming healthier if you start following a regular colon cleansing regime.
