I recently read an article in a popular vegetarian/vegan magazine concerning the diets of our pets.  I choose to be a vegetarian.  I don’t eat anything with a face.  I do not, however, look down on anyone who chooses to eat meat.  To each their own.

Animals, on the other hand, do not have a choice.  They eat what you feed them.  Our lovable lap cats and snugly dog buddies are CARNIVORES.  They are not omnivores, like people.  They have to eat meat to obtain proper nutrition.  I believe a vegetarian or vegan  diet for carnivorous animals is borderline abuse for malnutrition.

The diets of our pets should be a concern to any loving pet owner.  The major pet food companies add so much filler, dye and preservatives to pet food its good to look for alternatives.  But healthy, realistic alternatives.  Its natural for cats to chase birds and dogs to harass rabbits.  So instead of a strictly veg diet for Fido, look for a responsible alternative.  One where the animal killed lived well on grain food, the packaging plant uses recyclable material and nothing unrecognizable is on the  ingredient list.  For example Newman’s Own organic pet food has a good rep.

You can also chose to make your own pet food.  Find an organic butcher, or use Whole Food’s meat, and make it yourself! You decrease “food miles”  (the distance food is transported from the time of its production until it reaches the consumer) and know exactly what you pet isn’t getting, fillers, and what they are getting.  They are getting proper nutrition as nature intended.
